What Types of Ways Can Rugs Be Made?

Date: 03 February, 2010

An Area rug is made either by machine or by hand. Technology has enabled us to mass produce these gorgeous rugs, but there will always be differences in machine made and man made rugs. Machines can make several rugs in a few short minutes, with many different designs, sizes, and even colors. Rugs made in a factory will be more affordable than the rugs made by hand.

Variety and flexibility can be found in area rugs made by machine. A rug can be found with almost the same designs but in different colors and sizes sold by several different makers. The man made rug is a custom job therefore they are one of a kind designs with bright, gorgeous colors used in them. You can even have the same rug made with the same design but you will find differences in them.

Machine made rugs do not last as long as handmade ones. Handmade rugs are created with dyes from natural substances that make the colors longer. An area rug is a great investment if it is handmade. Handmade area rugs can last longer than a lifetime. Handmade rugs are passed from one generation to the next; they are priceless family heirlooms that become cherished over time by its owner.

Three different techniques tie handmade rugs together: knot, weave, and dyes. Weave is the first thing that has to be learned when making a rug. Weave is what is used in the making of a rug. The weave has three different techniques: hand tufted, and pile and flat weave.

Pile weaves is the most commonly used method of weaving when making a rug by hand. Several knots created together is how the pile weave is woven. When weaving with this method you will use a short string of yarn that has been tied around warp strands to make a knot. Once you have several rows of with knots on the surface, you will then pass strands of weft through the set of warp that is completed. You then beat the strands with a comb to secure the surface knots.

As many as 30 to 1000 knots per square inch are hand tied. A good weaver is able to tie a knot in ten seconds or less. These rugs are made with patience and lots of time to create a gorgeous piece of art work. Flat weave is used in the process of weaving also, but this does not calls for knots like the others do.

Once the handmade rug is finished it has it's own unique personality as is as gorgeous as anything you have every see. When hand tufting a rug there are no knots involved, instead wool or a type of yarn are pushed through the backing. This is what is known as the 'tuft'. A latex type of glue is then used on the rug to keep the tufts in place, it also is holds a second foundation in place. This second foundation is then covered by another one and the final backing is added.

I have only named a small few of the hand made ways you can make a rug. The most important thing that goes into a handmade rug is patience and time. These rugs cost more, but they will out last any other. Factory made rugs are wonderful rugs as well. They are pretty and also last quite a long time as well. These rugs are more affordable and can be found any almost any style, or color. Your taste in style will have to go into choosing your rug but in the end you will be happy with an area rug, no matter how it is made. -- iS
