The Four C’s to Consider For Quality Diamond Jewelry

Date: 13 March, 2010

As the old saying goes, diamonds are forever. This is the main reason why these gems have always been the favorite among jewelry gifts for marriage proposals- a diamond wedding ring symbolizes eternal love and fidelity. However, this precious stone is one of the most expensive of all gems so choosing the best quality is extremely required before buying your loved one a diamond gift.

During the years 1940s and 1950s, the Gemological Institute of America established four criteria to be used in evaluating the quality of diamonds. Tagged as the “4 Cs”, these are the Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut. As for the “carat”, diamond sizes are measured through the fractions of carats it possess. One carat is equivalent to 0.2 grams which is also as heavy as one paper clip. Most diamond jewelries sold are less than one carat.

Another criterion which is used in evaluating diamond jewelry is its “color”. Colorless diamonds are those that are most preferred and also the most expensive. However, rose pink and sapphire blue diamonds are also sold expensively because of the rarity of their hues. Ordinary diamonds which are the least expensive are those that are light brown and slightly yellow in color. As with “clarity”, the clearer and brighter the luster of diamonds, the more expensive they become.

Most diamonds are flawed with small inclusions or cracks which greatly affects their transparencies so the fewer these imperfections, the more expensive the diamond is sold. The last element used in evaluating diamonds is their “cut”. The cuts of diamonds greatly contribute to how they can reflect light so the more enhanced light the diamond gathers the better. Most of the times two diamonds could have the same color, or the same clarity and carat, but their price may still differ depending on the way they are cut. The most commonly used cut in diamond jewelry is the ‘standard round brilliant’ but cushion, emerald, and heart cuts are also popular cuts. So now that you know how to evaluate the quality of a diamond, remember these four C’s and constantly use this before making a purchase.

In the diamond industry, much like other businesses, there are things called “conflict diamonds”. These are diamonds that were illegally mined and sold by some people to buy themselves arms and weapons. These types of diamonds should not be patronized because they serve as fuels for criminals to do their evil deeds. In some regions of Africa, for example, the Central and Western Africa have rebels that drive their rebellions against their government through selling diamonds abroad. Fortunately, statistics say that 99% of the diamonds sold worldwide are legal except that those that come from these regions. Thus, it is highly recommended that one must inquire before making a purchase so that what you pay cannot be used as financial base for some criminalities.

How can you make sure what you buy is a legal diamond? Examine if the diamond is certified by the Kimberly Process. This is the official United Nations mandated system which is used in tracking diamond shipments from their suppliers to the buyers. -- iS
