Graduation Stoles, Caps, and Gowns

Date: 18 June, 2009

Even though graduation stoles usually are not part of the traditional graduation attire along with caps and gowns, they can be an important mark of distinction for those students at schools who would like a bit of extra flair for their attire. Graduates are not the only group of people who wear them though, because they are popularly associated with the clergy and ministries as distinctive pieces of accent attire.

There are quite a few different types of graduation stoles that are available, and although they are usually made of silk or satin, there are also many other types of fabrics that they are made of. They can be embroidered with different logos, symbols, pictures, and little decorations or dates.

The typical graduation stole is about 70 long for an adult, and is simply like a long sash that is draped around the neck over in front of the shoulders to hang down to around the knees. There are stoles that are also worn by students other than those who are adult size, such as those who are completing grade school, middle school, and even preschool as well. These sashes can also be used by a large number of groups to signify membership such as sports clubs, music groups, fraternities and sororities. They are available in just about any color, and they can be plain, decorated on one side or decorated on both sides.

Clergy members and ministers use the sashes for church and mass services, special occasions like weddings, baptisms, and funerals, and they all have different colors that they use for the different occasions. They are most often durable silk or sateen, although they are commonly made with cotton or polyester blends as well. Many people purchase the stoles as gifts for their priest or minister and have them personalized to signify something with meaning. Personalization can be done with embroidery or other sewing.

Although the average length of clergy and graduate stoles is usually 70 long, they are also made in those shorter lengths for adults at 60 inches and in longer lengths of about 80 inches. The typical width is about 4 wide, although the width can vary considerably as well depending on the size of the wearer and personal preference.

Ordering the supplies online is usually simple and quick, but many websites require a minimum quantity per order. However, the required numbers are kept pretty low and some websites will fill orders for any number of products, whether it is for one unit or one thousand. Larger quantities sometimes will qualify purchases for certain special discounts on shipping or on overall price, and there are so many different uses for these graduation stoles that many companies are kept busy filling orders through the entire year, not just for graduations.
